There used to be many years ago a program that helped provide down payment assistance, but that program ended many years ago. There are however a few other Government programs to assist homeowners, just none specific to first time buyers. CMHC Programs

Some of the programs offering financial assistance or grants include improving the structure of a home, improving handicapped accessibility of a home, building a secondary low income dwelling on site, etc. There are several programs and they are fairly easy to apply for once you have the information.
